BNP to stage marches at thanas today
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party will hold thana-level protests across the country today to demand the resignation of the Awami League government and reduction in high prices of essentials while the ruling Awami League has planned peace rallies in Dhaka for today.
A BNP press release on Friday said that the party would stage road marches at thanas across the country on Saturday (today), with central leaders participating in the marches.
Meanwhile, in a press release issued on Friday, the Dhaka South AL unit said that it would hold peace rallies at the thana level in Dhaka South City, which central committee members would attend.
The BNP has so far held road marches at the union, district and divisional levels.
The BNP and its alliances have started holding simultaneous programmes since the main opposition party held a mass procession in Dhaka on December 23, 2022.
The Ganatantra Mancha, a BNP ally combination of seven political parties namely Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, Nagarik Oikya, Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, Ganosamhati Andolan, Gono Odhikar Parishad, Bhashani Onusari Parishad and Rastra Sanskar Andolan, will hold a rally in front of the National Press Club at 11:00am today to press for the same demands.
The political combine is scheduled to bring out a march after the rally from the National Press Club to parade streets up to Bijoynagar in front of the Nightingale Hotel point.
A Ganatantra Mancha press release said that it would also stage road marches in some divisional cities today.
Besides, the alliance of like-minded 12 political parties and the Jatiyatabadi Samamana Jote, too, will hold rallies and road marches in the capital city today, a press release said.
The 12-party alliance will hold its rally in front of the Bijoynagar water tank at 11:00am while the Jatiyatabadi Samamana Jote will organise its rally in front of Al Razi Complex at Bijoynagar — also at 11:00am.
The Dhaka South Awami League unit announced in its press release that it would arrange peace rallies by the Shyampur rail gate and the Jatrabari crossing and at Dhakeshwari Balur Maath, Bangabandhu Avenue AL central office, Mughda Stadium and Dhanmondi 32.
All the peace rallies are scheduled to start at 3:00pm, added the press release.
The ruling party has been organising events to counter the BNP and other opposition political programmes since December 10, 2022, when the BNP concluded its divisional mass rallies in Dhaka.-NEWAGE
