Dhaka court acquits Shomi Kaiser of defamation case

Shomi Kaiser

A Dhaka court acquitted actress Shomi Kaiser of a defamation case.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court magistrate Satyabrata Sikder passed the order on Thursday.

The decision was acknowledged on Sunday.

The release order said that the plaintiff of the case did not appear before the court and the report of the Police Bureau of Investigation did not prove the allegations brought against Shomi.

In 2019, a Dhaka court ordered an investigation into a case filed against Shomi, also the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh president, for her ‘insulting behaviour’ with journalists at the National Press Club in Dhaka on April 24, 2019.

Shomi lost her two mobile phones during an event at the National Press Club, while she was delivering a speech, in 2019.

Right after that incident, her security guards locked the gate and frisked all the attending journalists and guests.

Around 50 journalists and more than a hundred guests were locked inside the conference room for more than half-an-hour following the incident.

Journalists became angry about the way they were searched, and they protested against it.

At one stage, Shomi reportedly labelled the reporters ‘thieves’ that sparked criticism and condemnation among the journalists present there.
