Bangladeshi Immigrant Day to be observed in New York on Sept 25

The state of New York in the USA, will observe “Bangladeshi Immigrant Day” annually on September 25 as it registered the date in the State Calendar on February 27.
A resolution adopted by the State’s senate session to this end mentioned that Father of the Nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for the first time in its history, gave a speech in Bangla at the general assembly of the United States on September 25, 1974.
“…This Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to memorialize Governor Andrew M Cuomo to proclaim September 25, 2019, as Bangladeshi Immigrant Day in the State of New York, and to recognize the many contributions of Bangladeshi-Americans to New York,” says the resolution, adopted in the senate session in New York’s capital city Albany on February 27.
The senate adopted the resolution responding to a proposal placed by Senator Toby Ann Stavisky being requested by Muktadhara Foundation (MF), a New York based Bangladeshi organization, MF founder Bishawjit Saha told BSS over phone on Wednesday.
Saha said the proposal was earlier rejected twice by the Senate in 2016 and 2018. It finally got the approval on February 27, he added.

According to the 2000 US Census, there are approximately 57,000 Bangladeshis in the United States and the New York metropolitan area is home to the largest Bangladeshi population.From 1990 to 2000, New York City’s Bangladeshi population increased by 471% (from 4,955 to 28,269).
About 85% of Bangladeshi New Yorkers were foreign-born, and 77% of these immigrants came to the US from 1990 to 2000. Some 30% of all Bangladeshi immigrants in the city in 2000 were naturalized US citizens – compared with 45% of all foreign-born city residents.
Bangladeshi New Yorkers’ per capita income was $10,479 – less than half of the city-wide figure ($22,402).
