5 abducted Bangladeshis rescued from Yemen

The rescued and two others, who were also detained in Yemen, are already back home

Five Bangladesh nationals have been rescued and repatriated from Yemen, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday.

The rescued Bangladeshis are Mohammed Yousuf, Mohammad Alauddin, Mohammed Alamgir, Mohammed Rahim Uddin and Mohammed Abu Tayub.

Two other Bangladesh nationals — Jamal Uddin and Rafiqul — were also repatriated. Both were detained in Aden.
Among them, five reached Dhaka on Sunday and the other two arrived Dhaka on December 30.

The five Bangladeshis were arrested by the Houti Coast Guard on February 14, 2020, while sailing from Oman to Saudi Arabia by ship. The ship was caught in storm and sank near Al Salaif Port of Hodeida in Yemen on February 12 last year.

All the crew were arrested by the Houthi Coast Guard, including the 5 Bangladesh nationals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with Bangladesh embassies in Oman, Kuwait and Jordan, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to rescue the abducted Bangladeshis. They were taken to Aden from Saana, where Indian and Egyptian nationals were rescued, with the help of IOM.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Embassy in Kuwait issued travel permits for the seven Bangladeshis. The IOM coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to repatriate the seven Bangladeshis from Aden.
