Youth to die for raping school girl in Chattogram

Bangladesh desk: A court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced a young man to death for raping and killing a school girl at Hathazari upazila in the district.

Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Halimullah Chowdhury handed down the verdict.

The condemn convict is Shahnewaj Siraj Munna, son of Shahjahan Siraj, a resident of Shahjalal Para.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Md Riad Uddin said the convict has been sentenced to death under Section 7 of the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Children Act. At the same time, a fine of Tk 1 lakh has been imposed in section 9 (2).

Ayub Khan, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.

According to the prosecution, on September 14, 2018, Shahnewaz Siraj alias Munna strangled Tuhin, an eighth grader school girl, after raping her. The body was wrapped in a plastic bag under the sofa for two days. His father Shah Jahan Siraj and mother Nigar Sultana assisted in the disappearance of the body.

Later, Tuhin’s elder brother lodged a murder case with Hathazari Police Station.

After investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet against the accused to the court on July 10, 2019.

On Monday, the court delivered the verdict after taking depositions of 18 witnesses.

However, Munna’s parents have been acquitted in this case.
