US expresses concern about telecom service disruptions in Bangladesh

The United States said that it was deeply concerned by the reports of ongoing disruptions of telecommunication services across Bangladesh.

‘We remain deeply concerned by reports of ongoing telecommunications disruptions across the country which limit the ability of people in Bangladesh, including American citizens there, to access critical information,’ US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at a regular briefing on July 23.

Earlier, Miller said that the US continued to closely follow developments in Bangladesh and called for calm and de-escalation.

He said that the US supported ‘peaceful assembly and peaceful protests’.

The Bangladesh government said work was under way to fully restore internet services and broadband internet was restored in some areas on a priority basis.

Foreign minister Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday said the situation would be back to normal within a few days.
