Teacher held for sharing murder video to incite religious violence

Bangladesh desk: A teacher of Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls College has been detained by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for questioning on charge of spreading on social media an old video footage of a murder in Dhaka’s Pallabi as the killing of Jatan Kumar Saha during recent communal violence in Noakhali.
Ruma Sarker, assistant professor of the college, has been taken to RAB custody at the elite force’s headquarters at Uttara for quizzing, an SMS sent by the RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, reads.
Earlier, Ruma Sarker was picked up from her Baily Road residence in the morning.
The video footage is of the killing of a trader Shahin Uddin, who was hacked to death in front of his son by two youths on May 16.
Several persons, including a former MP were arrested earlier in this connection.
The RAB said Ruma Sarkar used the social media Facebook to spread religious incitement, lies and rumours.
RAB Legal and Media Wing Assistant Director ASP ANM Imran Khan said Ruma had uploaded a video of the murder of trader Shahinuddin at Pallabi, claiming it to be the footage of the murder of Jatan Kumar Saha, who died in a mob attack in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila on October 15.
RAB would take legal action against Ruma according to the law, he added.
