Sedition case filed against Hasina, 73 others

Bangladesh desk: A sedition case was filed against deposed prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and 73 others on Thursday on allegations of plotting a civil war.
The Criminal Investigation Department filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court following permission from the home ministry, said CID media cell special superintendent of police Jashim Uddin.
The case was filed on allegations of conspiracy for plotting a civil war in an online Zoom meeting under the platform of recently formed Joy Bangla Brigade, he said.
‘We have filed the case with the CMM court and the court ordered the CID to investigate the case,’ Jashim said, adding that Awami League leaders from various districts joined the online meeting held on December 19, 2024.
According to a CID press release issued Thursday evening, AL United States unit vice-president Rabbi Alam was the second named accused in the sedition case in which 503 unnamed people were also sued.
The plaintiff came to know from the intelligence agencies that newly formed Joy Bangla Brigade at an online meeting on December 19 past year discussed handing over power to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina through a civil war and many vowed to continue their fight till their last breath, the CID press release said citing the case statement.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, amid a mass uprising and is now sheltered there.
The CID said that a total of 577 attendees of the meeting from different places of the country and aboard gave their consent to following the instructions of Sheikh Hasina.
Analysing the voice record of the meeting host of AL US unit vice-president Rabbi Alam, co-host and participants, the CID said that participants under the banner of Joy Bangla Brigade in home and aboard discussed that they would not allow the interim government to run the country peacefully.
The CID said that the meeting had specific elements for sedition as they wanted to oust the interim government through conspiracy and civil war.
Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took office on August 8, 2024, following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5.
