Missing Chinese worker of Banshkhali power plant found dead in Bangladesh

Workers and authorities of a coal-fired power plant by S Alam Group in Gandamara area in Banshkhali in Chattogram on Thursday found the body of a missing Chinese national who was working at the power plant.

The Chinese national was identified as Gi Kingwane. He was working at the SS power plant. He went missing on Wednesday afternoon.

Faruk Ahmed, chief coordinator of SS Power Plant, told New Age that they found Gi Kingwane dead and his body was recovered from a pond inside the plant area on Thursday morning.

Police received the body and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations, he said.

According to the plant authorities, Gi Kingwane went to the site adjacent to the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning for pipe installation work. His colleagues informed police about his disappearance at about 2:30pm.

Banshkhali police officer-in-charge Md Safiul Kabir said that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection and they were investigating the incident.

At least seven workers were killed and dozens were injured after police shot at a demonstration of workers, who were pressing for their nine-point demands, at the under-construction coal-fired power plant named SS Power Plant-1 Limited of S Alam Group at Baraghona under Gandamara Union of Banshkhali in Chattogram on April 17, 2021.

Another four persons were shot dead on April 4, 2016 during clashes with the police when the villagers staged a demonstration against the move to construct a coal-fired power plant in Gandamara area of Banshkhali in Chattogram.

The 1224-MW coal-fired power plant is being constructed at the cost of $2510.2 million with 30 per cent investment from seven Chinese banks. S Alam group is the local investor in the project.

The government has already waived stamp duty of about Tk 3,170 crore on land lease agreement and financing documents for the SS Power Limited under the Private Sector Power Generation Policy.
