Hospitals, doctors to be responsible for surgery accidents, says minister

Health and family welfare minister Samanta Lal Sen.
Online desk: Bangladesh Health and family welfare minister Samanta Lal Sen said that the doctors and the hospital authorities would have to take the responsibility if any accident occurs during an operation.
‘I want to make it clear that no hospital can run without meeting the pre-conditions. No hospital will also ever be approved if it does not have everything that is needed to perform a surgery. And if any accident occurs during an operation in a hospital, the doctors and the hospital authorities will have to take the responsibility of the accident’, he said, while talking to journalists after visiting the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Monday.
Samanta Lal Sen said that the existing pressure on the government medical college and hospitals would never decrease if the medical services did not reach the rural people.
‘The medical colleges are not only for medical services but also education and research – everything is conducted here. Therefore, we will improve the district hospitals and the other hospitals,’ he said, adding that they would try to make the Rajshahi Sadar Hospital active soon to reduce the pressure of the patients at RMCH.
In a reply to a question on the interns’ harassment and the ban on journalists to enter RMCH, the health minister said that he would look into the matter.
