Bangladesh: Govt slammed for failure in controlling prices

Bangladesh desk: Political parties, social organisations and trade unions on Saturday denounced the government failure in taking effective measures against abnormal rise in prices of essential commodities.
They also called for steps to bring down the prices.
Prices of rice, oil, sugar, onion and some other essential commodities have increased abnormally putting consumers in trouble.
Nagarik Oikya, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtatnrik Dal-Jasad, Bangladesher Samajtatnrik Dal, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal, Sammilita Samajik Andolan and Imarat Nirman Sramik Union Bangladesh held separate demonstrations in protest against soaring prices of daily essentials.
Nagarik Juba Oikya, Nagarik Nari Oikya and Nagarik Chhatra Oikya the front organisations of Nagarik Oikya held a protest rally in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh where convener of Nagarik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the Awami League government had failed to control prices.
The government failed to control the syndicates that are responsible for the increase in prices of daily essentials.
He also demanded that the government should step down as it failed to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
‘Our party will continue protests until the prices of essentials come down,’ he said adding that the party would hold a rally at Shahbagh at 3:00pm on Friday.
Nagarik Oikya central leader Shahidullah Kaiser, Nari Oikya leader Ferdausi Akter, Juba Oikya leader SMA Kabir Hasan, Chhatra Oikya leader Tariqul Islam and others spoke at the rally.
Some women with empty plates, pots and youths with empty bags attended in the programme.
Communist Party of Bangladesh held a rally at Shantinagar crossing protesting against price hikes of essentials, where its president Mujahidul Islam Selim said that the Awami League government was ignoring the rights of the people, as it was not voted to power by the people.
Central leaders of the party Ruhin Hossain Prince, Joly Talukder and others spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different roads of Shantinagar.
Samyabadi Dal, a partner of the Awami League led alliance, held a protest rally in front of the National Press Club, where its general secretary Dilip Barua said that the government had failed to control price hikes, which increased sufferings of the common people.
Moreover, many people had lost their jobs during Covid regime, Dilip Barua said.
Dhaka City unit of the party formed the human chain where city secretary Babul Biswas chaired.
City leaders Sunil Shil, Rasel Sarder, Shahana Bagum and others spoke at the programme.
Sammilita Samajik Andolan and Imarat Nirman Sramik Union Bangladesh jointly formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club, protesting against price hikes where labour leader Mizanur Rahman Babul chaired.
The Sramik union’s general secretary Mohammad Abdur Razzak, Samajik Andolan general secretary Saleh Ahmed and others spoke at the rally.
