Feni cop closed over land grabbing, extortion

SI Alamgir allegedly forced Nazrul to sign over a piece of his land in Dhaka’s Bashundhara residential area and also made him sign 8-10 blank stamp papers
Alamgir Hossain, sub-inspector (SI) of Chhagalnaiya police station in Feni, has been withdrawn from his duties after being charged with extortion of assets through threats and intimidation. He has been subsequently attached to the district police lines, confirmed Chhagalnaiya police inspector Mezbah Uddin, citing the withdrawal order which was issued in a notice from the district police superintendent’s office Tuesday.
Nazrul Islam, a businessman from Fulgazi upazila of the district, lodged a written complaint with the police headquarters and the district police superintendent’s office on September 13.
According to the complaint, some local public representatives, including Chhagalnaiya Upazila Chairman Mejbaul Haider Chowdhury Sohel, and SI Alamgir demanded a large sum of money from Nazrul and threatened to press false arms and drugs charges against him if otherwise.
As Nazmul expressed unwillingness to comply, the accused took Nazrul’s family hostage on June 17 and looted land and other important documents as well as gold ornaments and other valuables from the house.
The next morning, the accused once again raided Nazrul’s house and abducted Arifin Azad Badal, a close relative of the victim. He was held captive at the house of the upazila chairman. Later, Arifin was then handed over to SI Alamgir of Chhagalnaiya police station.
Moreover, SI Alamgir allegedly forced Nazrul to sign over a piece of his land in Dhaka’s Bashundhara residential area and also made him sign 8-10 blank stamp papers.
Wishing to remain anonymous, a high ranking official in the district police said the district police had launched an investigation into the allegations against SI Alamgir Hossain and thus he has been withdrawn for the sake of the investigation. Source: Dhaka Tribune
