Fakhrul cautions against India’s harmful campaign
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday accused India of hatching conspiracies against Bangladesh while it gave shelter to ‘the mastermind of fascism’.
India, which was providing shelter to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was carrying out various malicious campaigns against Bangladesh, he said.
‘The fascism’s main architect [Hasina] is now in India,’ Fakhrul said while talking to journalists at a meeting at his residence in Thakurgaon district town.
‘We should be cautious about this, or else, as a nation, we’d be in great danger,’ he warned.
Fakhrul also stressed the urgency of a free and fair election, stating that an appropriate system needed to be established before elections to ensure a fair national poll.
When asked about BNP’s stand regarding the proportional representation electoral system, Fakhrul rejected the idea, saying, ‘We have rejected this electoral system. It is not feasible in the context of the country.’
Castigating the ousted Awami League government for dividing the nation, the BNP leader said, ‘The division caused by the fascist government has to be undone. We need a united nation.’

About the current situation, Fakhrul said, ‘The 17 years of turmoil cannot be solved in 17 days or even 17 months. Therefore, we must give time to the interim government.’
But the interim government should focus on the urgently needed reforms leaving the rest of the reforms with the parliament to be formed through the next general elections, he added.
Fakhrul urged caution in appointing advisers by the interim government and said that care should be taken to ensure that appointment of any individuals as advisers did not spark controversy.
He also mentioned different expectations or even resentment among different sections of people regarding the interim government. Some people were calling for a revolution, some were calling for elections, and others were saying that the interim government was an ally of the fascists, he said.
‘Right now it’s important to grasp what people really want. We have assessed and found that people want a free and fair election with the participation of all,’ he said.
‘The necessary reforms to ensure that the elections are fair must be implemented. That is why we have been saying that the government must provide a roadmap for holding elections within a reasonable time.’
About the persistent food inflation, he said that the price hike deepened people’s hardship.
‘The government should focus more on this issue and take necessary steps to reduce the prices of essential commodities,’ Fakhrul added.
