Covid-19: Death toll in Bangladesh crosses 3,900 as 46 more die

Bangladesh has registered 46 new deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the total body count to 3,907.

The country also confirmed 292,625 total infections with 2,265 people testing positive in the last 24 hours.

According to the press release sent by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday afternoon, the recovery count rose to 175,567 after another 2,952 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

Of the 46 deceased – 36 men and 10 women — 27 were from Dhaka division, eight from Rajshahi, five from Chittagong, two each from Barisal and Sylhet, and one each from Khulna and Rangpur.

Among the victims, 45 died at different hospitals and one at home.

So far, 3,082 men (78.88%) and 825 women (21.12%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.34%.

The DGHS said 10,595 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 11,356 samples were tested in the 91 authorized labs — government and private — across the country.

Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 19.95% tested positive, while 20.44% cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 803,634 lives and infected 23,144,577 people across the world till 4pm on Saturday, according to Worldometer.

As many as 15,730,519 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the globe.

The website also confirms that so far, the number of active cases stands at 6,610,424 globally. Of which, 6,548,698 (99%) were identified to be in mild condition while the rest 61,726 (1%) have been marked as serious or critical.
