COVID-19 claims 29 more, infects 1,929 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh desk: COVID-19 claimed 35 more lives while 1,929 more patients were detected with the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Friday.

With the fatalities and new cases, the number of COVID-19 deaths rose to 4,412 and cases reached 3,21,615 in Bangladesh.

The Directorate General of Health Services in a release said 13,073 samples were tested in the past 24 hours across the country and 1,929 of them or 14.76 per cent of the samples were found positive for COVID-19.

The test positivity rate was lowest in recent months. The overall test positivity rate now stood at 20.04 per cent.

The case fatality rate of COVID-19 in Bangladesh is now 1.37 per cent.

Bangladesh on March 8 reported the first COVID-19 positive cases while the first death was logged 10 days later on March 18.

The country is now on 26th week of infections.

The case positivity rate dropped recently from 23.85 per cent in 22nd week to 21.08 per cent in 23rd week, 20.06 per cent in 24th week, 17.35 per cent in 25th week and 16.00 per cent in the  six days of the ongoing 26th week.

The DGHS said that among the 29 new deceased, 22 were male and seven were female.

Fifteen of them were above 60 years of age, seven were between 51-60 years, three were between 41-50 years, three others were between 31-40 years and one was between 11-20 years.

Fourteen of them died in Dhaka division, four in Rajshahi division, three in Barishal division and two died at each of Chattogram, Khulna, Rangpur and Mymensingh division.

In the past 24 hours, two of the COVID-19 deceased died at homes.

Many COVID-19 patients are dying at home as at least 625 COVID-19 patients died at home and 31 died on way to hospitals since May 17, per DGHS. Most of the patients were opting to stay at home.

On Friday, only 4,123 COVID-19 patients were taking treatment at hospitals, although the number of active cases was 1,01,012 on Friday.

So far 2,16,191 COVID-19 patients recovered in the country, including 2,211 in the past 24 hours.
