BNP to decide president removal issue discussing at party forum

Bangladesh desk: BNP has not made any final decision on the removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu during a meeting with leaders from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said Hasnat Abdullah, convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

However, the party said it will discuss the matter at the party forum before making a decision on the removal of the president, Hasnat said.

On Saturday (October 26) evening, a three-member delegation led by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with seven leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee at the BNP Chairperson’s political office at Gulshan in the capital.

Following the meeting, Hasnat Abdullah said, “Three BNP leaders heard our statement at the meeting. They said they would discuss our position at the party forum and then inform us about their decision.”

He said in a separate meeting with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, they reached a consensus on the issue of removal of the president.

Hasnat said, “We are holding discussions with political parties across the country about the new political arrangement. Today, we discussed three main points with the BNP: the formation and declaration of a Second Republic; the quick removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin to resolve the political crisis; and the means of governance under national unity.”

He said that the Islami Andolan Bangladesh also supports the removal of the president on moral grounds.

In the coming days, further discussions on these issues will be held with the Ganatantra Mancha, the 12-Party Alliance, and the Gono Odhikar Parishad, Hasnat Abdullah added.

Meanwhile, the media cell of BNP said seven representatives from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee took part in the meeting though the Nagorik Committee convener introduced nine representatives while talking to the mass media following the meeting.
