A group of people attacked the house of Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Sector-4 of Uttara in the capital Saturday afternoon.

A release issued by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that ‘some unruly outsiders’ threw brickbats at the house and damaged it.

The party standing committee at its meeting Saturday evening resolved that the government encouraged the attack, the release said.

‘The attack was committed by the government’s agents to divert the movement against epidemic of enforced disappearance, murder and violence against women and children,’ it read.

The statement said that the party standing committee protested against and condemned the criminal act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner for Uttara division Tapos Kumar Das told New Age that they got no such allegation until 8:45pm.

Witnesses said that a group of party activists loyal to the deprived party nomination seekers for Dhaka-18 constituency in the upcoming by-election began demonstration in front of the party secretary general’s house in the afternoon and the attack was committed towards the end of the demonstration.

Nine aspirants sought BNP nomination for the constituency and the party secretary general on Friday announced that the party picked SM Jahangir, president of Dhaka north unit of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, for the constituency.
