BNP leader Annie on four-day remand

Bangladesh desk: A court in Dhaka has placed BNP publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie on a four-day remand in a case filed on charges of obstructing police and vandalising cars with the city’s Dhanmondi Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam’s court placed him on the remand.

Earlier, Annie was produced before the court. Dhanmondi Police Station’s investigation officer (IO) Shahidi Hasan pleaded to the court to place the accused on a seven-day remand for interrogation. On the other hand, the lawyer representing the accused pleaded to cancel the remand of his client and submitted a petition seeking bail. Hearing both sides, the court placed Annie on a four-day remand.

Before placing the accused on remand, the magistrate wanted to know whether Annie would tell anything else before the court. Weeping before the magistrate, Annie said, “I do politics. Police would arrest me if I commit any crime. But, brutal torture was inflicted upon me under the custody of police station. Do we live in a civilised world? Am I a thief, or robber?”

Earlier, police picked him up from his residence in the city’s Dhanmondi on Tuesday night.

Dhanmondi Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Parvez Islam said they arrested Annie last night. There was a case against him with Dhanmondi Police Station and two warrants issued in Lakshmipur.
