Bangladesh desk:  Students protesting against the reinstatement of quotas in public services and demanding reform in the system and leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League clashed on the Dhaka University campus on Monday afternoon.

The clash broke out at about 3:00pm when the BCL leaders and activists threw brick chips and stones at anti-quota protestors from residential halls of the university, according to eyewitnesses.

Both groups became engaged in chase and counter-chase all over the campus.

A protesting student said that the BCL leaders threw stones from the roof of Bijoy Ekattor Hall.

‘The protesters became aggrieved and clashed with Chhatra League,’ he added.

Minutes before the clash, the BCL president Saddam Hossain said that the protesters were crossing the line.

‘Bangladesh Chhatra League knows how to deal with them politically,’ he added.

Earlier, the protesting students of different educational institutions, including DU, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, Bangladesh Dhaka Medical College, Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls’ College and Eden College, gathered at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the DU campus.

The protests were sparked on Sunday night when thousands of university students across Bangladesh took to the streets, primarily on their campuses, in protest at comments of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding quota protesters.

Prime Minister Hasina during a press conference at her official residence, Ganabhaban, responded to questions regarding the anti-quota protests on Sunday.

She questioned, ‘Why is there so much anger against the liberation war and freedom fighters? Will the grandchildren of freedom fighters not receive quotas? Will Razakars’ grandchildren get them? My question is to the people of the country.’

The protesting students demanded the prime minister to withdraw her comments.
