Bangladesh: ULAB student dies after alleged rape; 2 remanded

Bangladesh Desk:  A Dhaka court has placed two youths, students of a private university, on a five-day remand in a case filed over the death of their friend.
The accused are Mortuza Raihan Chowdhury, 21, and Nuhad Alam Tafsir, 21. Both are the students of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB).
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the remand order on Sunday.

Metropolitan court’s assistant police SI Farruq Hossain confirmed the matter on Monday.

The court also asked to submit investigation report on February 16 after taking the case into cognisance.

Mortuza Raihan and Nuhat Alam have been arrested following a case filed by the victim’s father with Mohammadpur Police Station. In the lawsuit, the young woman’s father made five of her friends accused.

According to the case, the young woman and Raihan, the main accused, went to the house of Arafat from Mirpur at 4pm on January 28. The trio, later, went to a restaurant in city’s Uttara area where their another two friends were waiting. They drank alcohol at the restaurant.

Rayhan and one of his friend took the young woman to one of her friend’s house in Mohammadia Homes Limited in Mohammadpur as she fell sick and raped her there.

When the victim’s physical condition deteriorated, the duo first took her to Dhanmondi Ibn Sina Hospital. As the hospital refused to handle the patient, she was then taken to Anwer Khan Modern Hospital where the victim  succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning.

The victim’s father lodged the case before her death.

One of the accused in the case Arafat, 28, who fell sick after drinking alcohol, also died at City Hospital in Mohammadpur on Sunday.
Police are searching for a youth who took the alcohol to the restaurant.
The incident took place three weeks after an ‘O’ level student of Mastermind School was allegedly raped and murdered by her friend at a flat in the city’s Kalabagan area.
