The government on Thursday issued a gazette notification banning faith-biased Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The notification was issued by the home affairs ministry on Thursday afternoon.

According to Section 18 (1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Jamaat, Shibir and their other front organisations have been banned through the government’s executive order.

Earlier, the law ministry sent a file to the home ministry with a legal opinion on the ban.

The ministers have been accusing Jamaat and its student organisation Shibir of involvement in the violence during the quota reform movement.

In this context, the top leaders of the Awami League-led alliance agreed to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir at the 14-party meeting on Monday.
