Bangladesh: 13 to die, 19 get life term for killing six students in Aminbazar

Bangladesh desk: The Additional District and Sessions’ Judge Court – 4 in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced 13 people to death and 19 others to suffer life term rigorous imprisonment in the case of killing six students at Aminbazar in Dhaka at the night of Shab-e-Barat in 2011.
Judge Ismot Jahan pronounced the verdict also acquitting 25 accused in the case. A total of 44 accused, out of 57, in the case heard the verdict from the dock while the remaining 13 accused faced the trial in absentia.
The death sentence recipients are Malek, Sayeed, Rashid, Nihar, Ismail, Alam, Aslam, Mir Hossain, Rajab, Rana, Mujibur, Hamid and Anwar.
The life term imprisonment recipients include Shahin, Farid, Rajib, Sattar, Selim, Monir, Ovi, Mobarak, Akhil, Bashir, Nur Islam, Rubel, Shahadot, Tutul, Mokhles, Masud, Toton, Saiful and Owasim.
In the early hours of July 17, 2011, six students were beaten to death by angry mob after branding them as bandits at Aminbazar in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
Three of the deceased were students of Mirpur Bangla College, while the others were of Tejgaon College, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology and Maple Leaf International School in the capital.
Savar Model police filed a murder case against 60 people in connection with their involvement in the killing.
On January 13, 2013, additional police superintendent Sharif Uddin Ahmed of RAB Headquarters, also the investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against the 60 accused.
The trial in the case started on July 8, 2013 after a court framed charges against the accused.
