20 hurt in BCL attack on JCD activists at DU

At least 20 people, including leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and a journalist, were injured in an attack at Dhaka University on Tuesday.

JCD general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shamol complained that Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists launched the attack at Teachers-Students Centre at about 12 noon.

 

Among the injured, JCD central president Fazlur Rahman Khokon, joint convener of DU JCD unit Akhtar Hossain, Zahir Uddin Ahmed, Abu Jafar, Shahjahan Shaon, Mostafizur Rahman Rubel, Md Russell Mia, Ariful Islam, and member of DU JCD Tariqul Islam Tara are among the injured.

JCD general secretary  Iqbal said, ‘They attacked us when we were getting ready to start a relief distribution programme marking the 40th anniversary of death of Bangladesh Nationalist Party founder Ziaur Rahman. Over 20 activists were injured.’

‘The leaders and activists of BCL Dhaka city unit attacked us and DU unit activists led them,’ he alleged.

Besides, Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall unit BCL joint general secretary Amir Hamza slapped Amjad Hossain Hridoy, a campus reporter of online news portal Dhaka Post.

Amjad claimed that Amir slapped him when he introduced himself as a journalist.

Amir Hamza said, ‘I did not recognise him at first. After getting the identity, I put him aside.’

DU proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, ‘We have already informed the proctorial team about the incident and will take necessary steps against those involved in the matter.’

DU BCL general secretary Saddam Hossain said, ‘We know nothing about the attack. The incident might have occurred due to internal conflict over the formation of a Chhatra Dal committee. Chhatra League activists had no involvement in the incident.’
