Mother drowns attempting to save daughter on New South Wales’ South Coast beach

A mother pulled from the water at Pebbly Beach has died after attempting to save her daughter.

Emergency services were called to the beach at Durras North, near Batemans Bay in NSW, just after 1pm Tuesday and found the woman unconscious in the water.

Surf Life Saving NSW confirmed the woman had been attempting to rescue her teenage daughter at the beach.

Police said two surfers managed to drag the woman onto their boards and commenced CPR before a Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter arrived at the scene.

Paramedics continued CPR but the woman was declared dead at the scene.

The teenage girl was treated by paramedics at the scene.

She remains in a stable condition.

Pebbly Beach is a remote, unpatrolled beach that is a popular tourist destination known for sightings of kangaroos on the beach.

According to Surf Life Saving NSW, it marks the 11th bystander drowning on the NSW coastline since July 2022.

A bystander drowning occurs when a person dies after having initially entered the water in an attempt to rescue another person in distress.

The woman is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
