US embassy voices concerns over threats to Peter Haas

Violence, or threats of violence, directed at diplomatic personnel is unacceptable and deeply troubling, the US Embassy in Dhaka said on Wednesday.

‘We have repeatedly raised our concerns about the threatening rhetoric directed at Ambassador Peter Haas with the Bangladeshi government,’ US embassy spokesperson Stephen Ibelli told media.

The embassy spokesperson also said that the Bangladesh government has the obligation to ensure the security of US diplomatic missions and personnel under the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

On November 6, union Parishad chairman Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, also convener of the union unit of the Awami League, in a rally threatened the US ambassador in the presence and cooperation of all the accused in a public meeting in Chattogram’s Banskhali.

He threatened to beat up Haas publicly and also made derogatory comments against the diplomat, which were published in different newspapers on November 8.
