Two held at AL rally over Yunus resignation rumour
The police arrested two activists of the Awami League as the party brought out a procession at Bansa Bazar under Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali Friday evening.
The AL brought out the procession rejoicing social media posts on chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, a rumour that the interim government chief had resigned when he was visiting Switzerland.
The arrestees are Juba League activist Ibrahim Khalil alias Russell, 42, and AL activist Golam Kibria alias Liton, 45, of Bansa village of the upazila.
Police and locals said that a group of AL and Juba League activists, seeing rumor about the resignation of Yunus on Facebook, brought out a procession in Bansa Bazar Friday evening.
On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested them, the police said.
Chatkhil police station officer-in-charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury said that the duo was sent to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Noakhali showing them arrested in a case filed over an attack on the police station on August 5, 2024 and the court sent them to jail on Saturday.
On Saturday, Yunus returned home after his four-day visit to Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.
