Restore democracy ousting ‘fascist govt’: Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with leaders and activists places a wreath at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman marking the party’s 42nd founding anniversary in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday observed its 42nd founding anniversary with a call to restore democratic rule by strengthening the party, to oust the ‘fascist government’ and to establish a ‘people’s government’.

BNP leaders at an online discussion complained that the Awami League government had failed in every sector and had been trying to destroy the opposition BNP and to suppress dissenting voices for last few years.

They complained that the government did not believe in democracy and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was kept confined due to political vengeance.

The leaders also stressed the need for strengthening movement to free Khaleda.

Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Awami League had introduced misrule in the country by destroying democracy.

‘We must wage a massive movement to end the misrule of Awami League,’ said Mirza Fakhrul, who chaired the discussion meeting.

He stressed the need for strengthening the party, forgetting dissention among the party activists.

‘Khaleda Zia is the symbol of democracy. We have to free her with our best efforts to free democracy,’ Fakhrul added.

Addressing the discussion as the chief guest, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain alleged that the AL had ‘murdered’ democracy twice — first by founding Bksal in 1975 and then in December 29, 2018 night, the night prior to the December 30, 2018 national elections, by stuffing ballot boxes and rigging the election to grab the power forcibly.

‘But BNP freed democracy twice — first by introducing multi-party democracy by Zia and the second time by introducing parliamentary democracy in 1991 after ousting the autocratic government,’ he said.

The Awami League had failed to tackle coronavirus crisis properly, Mosharraf said.

He added that the BNP was founded on September 1, 1978 for a historical need against the backdrop of the ‘failures and misrule’ of Bangladesh Krishak Shramik Awami League.

BNP standing committee members Jamir Uddin Sirker, Moudud Ahmed, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, and BNP Dhaka North City unit president Habib-un-Nabi Sohel, among others, also took part in the discussion.

Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Ani conducted the discussion.

In Dhaka, BNP central leaders and leaders of its front and associate organisations placed wreaths at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning.

Leaders and activists of Dhaka City north and south units of the party led by the party’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also placed wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman.
