Mitu murder case: Former SP Babul Akter gets ad-interim bail

Bangladesh desk:  The High Court today granted ad-interim bail to Babul Akter, former superintendent of police, in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.

The court also issued a rule asking the state to explain why Babul Akter should not be granted permanent bail in this case.

The HC bench of justices Md Atoar Rahman and Md Ali Reza granted the bail and issued a rule following a bail petition filed by Babul.

Babul’s lawyer Jayed Bin Amjad told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for his client to get released from jail following the HC order.

The HC granted the bail on the ground of contradictions in the confessional statements made by some other accused of the case.

Besides, the case was filed by Babul Akter in connection with the incident of the murder of his wife Mitu, but later on Babul Akter was made accused and arrested in the same case after the police bureau of investigation took over the case, the lawyer added.

Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir placed arguments on behalf of Babul during the hearing of the bail petition.

Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to the school bus stop in Chattogram city’s GEC intersection on June 5, 2016. Following the incident, Babul filed the case with Panchlaish Police Station, accusing three unidentified men.

Later, the case was taken over by PBI from the Detective Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
