Man dies in Paltan police custody hours after his detention

Family alleges he was tortured to death
A man died in Paltan police custody in Tuesday night, hours after his detention.
Victim Masud Rana’s family alleged that the Paltan police tortured him to death in their custody.
The police sent Masud to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night where doctors declared him dead.
Masud’s wife Tahmina Akhter said that they lived in Kanchpur area and her husband, along with another person named Momen, was picked up by the police from Kanchpur on Tuesday night.
Police called her early Wednesday and informed her that Masud died and the body was at DMCH.
A police officer of the Paltan police station, seeking anonymity, said that Masud was arrested in the city’s Gulistan area following a Yaba seizure incident and assistant sub-inspector Razib Das filed a case in this connection.
The officer did not make any comment on the incident of his death in police custody.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Motijheel division and Paltan police station senior officials could not be reached for comments regarding the incident.
DMP deputy commissioner for media Walid Hossain told New Age that Masud was an accused in a drug case and arrested with Yaba on Tuesday night.
He was also a drug addict and got injured on his head after collapsing down in the police station, said Walid.
Masud was rushed to Rajarbagh police hospital and then DMCH where doctors declared him dead.
The incident took place a day after a murder suspect, in his twenties, died in the custody of Bagerhat Police Bureau of Investigation during interrogation on Monday afternoon.
