Govt established culture of disappearance, impunity: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alam on Friday alleged that the government has established the culture of disappearance and impunity in Bangladesh.
He made the allegation while addressing a virtual press conference from his residence in city’s Uttara area on Friday noon.
Fakhrul said the present government has established the culture of disappearance and impunity.
He further said, “Plainclothes policemen detained nine leaders and activists of BNP after Dhaka-18 by-polls. Of them, five are still missing.”
Blaming the government for creating a one-party rule, Fakhrul said they (government) want to cripple the power by grabbing and politicizing all institutions of the state.
He said, “Setting fire on buses in Dhaka on November 12 is one of the old traditional tricks. We said it repeatedly that the agents of government set fire on busses to harass, arrest and torture BNP leaders and activists.”
Claiming the culture of disappearance is a new one, Fakhrul said, “Disappearances are increasing gradually after Awami League formed government in 2008. An environment of terror has created in the arena of political and social sector through this disappearance.”
He said party’s former organizing secretary Ilias Ali was disappeared in 2012 and still missing. Image of the country tarnished abroad for disappearance, added Fakhrul.
“Ten US senators in their letter mentioned that about 400 people of Bangladesh became the victim of extra-judiciary killings. This is an imaginable matter in a civilized and democratic country. Reports of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, annual reports of US, EU and UK highlighted the human rights violations of our country in their reports,” said the BNP secretary general. Observer
