Girder collapse : BRT construction works to remain suspended

Bangladesh desk: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam has suspended all the construction works of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) following the death of five members of a family after a girder fell on a private car.
The mayor made the announcement during his visit to the spot of the incident at Uttara’s Jasimuddin Road on Tuesday morning.
Officials involved with the project were also present at the spot.
He also expressed deep shock over the tragedy.
“The BRT project even lacks minimum safety measures. For this, accidents are occurring frequently, increasing public suffering. Construction works cannot be allowed until we ensure the safety of the citizens,” mayor Atiqul Islam said.
Decision on resumption of construction work will be taken following a meeting with BRT authority on Thursday, the DNCC mayor added.
The directors of the BRT, Metro Rail and other Dhaka development projects have been summoned to the mayor’s offices on Thursday.
“I will speak to them there. We will only resume work when safety is ensured in the construction area.”
Earlier on Monday midnight, a case was filed with Uttara West Police Station accusing the concerned officials of China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), the contractor firm, and the crane driver for their negligence.
