Ex-OC Pradeep, Liaqat among 15 indicted in Sinha murder case

Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judges Court on Sunday indicted 15 accused, including former Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das and inspector Liakat Ali, in the case of killing retired army major Sinha Md Rashed Khan on July 31, 2020.

Judge Md Ismail indicted the 15 accused in the afternoon amid tight security in and outside the court.

The court also set July 26 for commencement of their trial through recording statements of prosecution witnesses.

Besides Pradeep and Liakat, the accused also include Nandadulal Rakshit, Sagar Deb, Kamal Hossain and Abdullah Al Mamun, Safanur Karim, Liton Mia, Md Abdullah, Md Shahjahan, Md Rajib, Rubel Sharma, Nurul Amin, Nezam Uddin, and Ayaz Uddin.

The court also rejected the discharge petition filed by the accused.

On December 13, 2020, senior assistant superintendent Khairul Islam of Rapid Action Battalion -15, who led the investigation in the case, submitted the charge sheet against the 15 suspects in the case.

On July 31, 2020, Sinha, 36, who took early retirement from the Bangladesh Army in November 2018, was shot dead at a police checkpoint on Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Marine Drive at Shamlapur under Teknaf.

Immediately after the killing, Teknaf police claimed that Sinha was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between police and suspected drug peddlers.

On August 5, 2020, Sinha’s elder sister filed a murder case against the then Teknaf police station OC Pradeep, SI Nandadulal and several others with a court in Cox’s Bazar in connection with the killing of her brother.
