The Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims, is being celebrated in Bangladesh on Friday with religious fervour after a month of fasting amid the nationwide restrictions to contain the Covid outbreak.
Like previous year after the Covid outbreak in the country, there is almost no outdoor activity this year to prevent the transmission of Covid-19. Muslim devotees said Eid prayers inside the mosques.
The government had earlier asked the devotees to say Eid prayers in nearby mosques maintaining the health guidelines and to avoid congregations in open spaces.
‘Although the Islamic sharia encourages offering Eid prayer at Eidgahs or open spaces, the devotees are now requested to offer their prayers at nearby mosques amid the coronavirus situation,’ said a government notification issued on April 26, adding that there can be several Eid jamaats, if necessary.
President Md Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina greeted people of the country in separate messages on the occasion of holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Eid jamaat at historic Azipmpur Dayera Sharif Jame Mosque was held a 10:00am.
The national flag is seen hoisted atop government and non-government office buildings on the day.
The main city streets and road islands were decorated with the national flag and banners inscribed with ‘Eid Mubarak’ in both Bangla and Arabic.
Television channels and radio stations are telecasting special programmes.
Special diets will be served in hospitals, jails, government children’s homes, Chhotomoni Nibash, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes, orphanages, Vagrant Welfare and Destitute Welfare centres, according to the BSS report.
Covid-19 killed 31 more people and infect 1,290 infections in the past 24 hours until Thursday 8:00am, raising the death toll to 12,076 and infections to 7,78,687 in the country since the virus was detected on March 8, 2020 .
