BSF retreats from constructing fence on border after BGB objection

In the face of objection from the Border Guard Bangladesh, the Indian Border Security Force on Thursday stopped constructing a barbed wire fence in Dahagram area along Patgram border in Lalmonirhat.
The BGB was seen still present in the area on Thursday morning, said its officials, adding that the paramilitary force would keep the BSF from building any fences along the border at any cost.
The international law does not allow constructing any such fences within 150 yards of the no-man’s-land.
But the Bangladesh border force spotted their Indian counterpart erecting a barbed wire fence 60 yards from the Indian side in the no-man’s-land on the day, BGB officials said.
Members of the Karun camp of the 6th Battalion BSF with the help of Indian nationals illegally began installing a barbed wire fence.
A BGB patrol team immediately reached the spot and stopped the work but the BSF members tried to continue their work defying BGB’s objection.
BGB Panbari camp company commander Jamil Ahmed said that they had lodged a verbal protest immediately.
‘BGB patrol teams have been deployed in the area round the clock and surveillance is increased,’ he added.
He said that they called on the BSF authorities to hold a company commander level flag meeting but the BSF was yet to respond.
