BD Home minister urges people not to consume spurious liquor

Bangladesh Desk: Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday urged people not to consume spurious liquor and instructed the authorities concerned to take stern action against the manufacturers of such toxic alcohol.

The minister came up with the remarks at a progaramme in the capital.

Asaduzzaman was inaugurating the Bangabandhu Corner at Police Plaza in Dhaka. River Police set up the corner at the plaza.

Home minister’s comments came up amid numbers of deaths in Dhaka, Bogura and other districts caused by spurious liquor consumption recently.

‘I urge people not to drink spurious liquor,’ the minister said.

The minister said that law enforcement agencies were investigating the recent deaths and trying to find out the people who were involved in manufacturing spurious liquor.

Spurious alcohol has now become a major concern as at least 18 deaths, caused by consumption of toxic liquor, were reported in the past few days and over a dozen of people were going under treatment for the same reason.

Physicians and chemists said that ethanol and food grade colour were used to make liquor; but some businessmen were using methanol and chemical colour to produce liquor and selling them in guise of foreign brands, putting lives in danger.

Police busted a spurious alcohol factory in the capital’s Bhatara area early Tuesday and arrested six people for manufacturing fake alcohol.
