Bangladesh: LDC Graduation Review transition period until 2026 accepted

Online Desk: A United Nations body on Friday agreed to extend the transition period by two more years following intervention by the government to leave the least development county status.
The UN Committee for Development Policy agreed to set the country‘s LDC transition period for graduation to 2026 from 2024 in a meeting, according to a message at 11:20pm on Friday from Debapriya Bhattacharya, a member of the UN CDP.
The triennial meeting was held in New York to review the country’s progress on its LDC graduation.
In 2018, Bangladesh successfully met all the criteria necessary for its elevation to a developing country in its first review.
In wake of COVID-19 pandemic and its adverse impacts on socio-economy, Bangladesh has sought the facilities reserved for the least developed countries for five years of preparations.
Debapriya Bhattacharya who joined the meeting virtually said that Laos and Nepal had also been recommended by the UN CDP for completing their graduation process in 2026.
But the country’s neighbour Myanmar was not recommended by the same committee for competing graduation by 2026, he added.
