Bangladesh: ‘EC can’t be formed by enacting law in pandemic, hence search committee’

Bangladesh desk: The Election Commission will be formed through a search committee, said Law Minister Anisul Huq today.

“I am not saying that we will not follow the law that is mentioned in the constitution to form the EC. But given the pandemic situation and the EC’s term expiring next February, it is not possible to form an EC by enacting law,” he said today at a programme at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.

“After everyone agreed, the search committee was made into a gazette. Although the gazette is not a law, since it was done with the consent of all and was decided by the president, it is close to the law. I’m still saying it’s not the law; it’s closer to the law,” said the minister.
