Social distancing concerns as Sydney commuters return to work

Sydney’s transport network could soon struggle under the weight of commuters in peak hour times, as commuters return to offices. (Nick Moir)
Social distancing could soon be a challenge on Sydney’s transport network during peak hour, as more commuters begin to return to work.
Green dots, used to indicate where people can sit, may become redundant as patronage approaches 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
This comes as NSW goes more than 30 days without community transmission of COVID-19, and the government prepares to roll-out the Pfizer vaccine to frontline workers in the next few weeks.
Public transport hubs have been quieter in recent months, as people worked from home.
The NSW government is reportedly considering increasing the dots to keep up with the predicted surge, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The dots are one precaution on public transport. Commuters can access real-time information through apps, social media and online to see which services have space available to maintain physical distancing.
Face masks are still mandatory on public transport and public transport waiting areas.
The rule is also applicable to taxis and rideshare services.
Residents in Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast and Wollongong must wear a mask or risk a $200 on-the-spot fine.
Children aged 12 and under are exempt from the rule but are encouraged to wear masks wherever possible.
