Migrant workers lay siege to Expatriates’ Welfare Ministry

Hundreds of desperate migrant workers have laid siege to the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment in Dhaka demanding to expedite their return to their workplaces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with available tickets and flights.

The Bangladeshi expatriates took position in front of the ministry on the Eskaton Road since Wednesday morning to vent their frustration over failure to secure return tickets to the kingdom.

A delegation of the demonstrators has already entered the ministry to discuss their issues, said Sajjadur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) of Ramna zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Meanwhile, another group of demonstrators met Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and talked about their issues, the DC added.

Saudi Arabia migrant Jalal Uddin said the minister called a group of five people among the protesters whose visas have expired.

The minister, however, assured them that the Bangladesh government will discuss on the visa extension with the kingdom authorities.

Earlier in the morning, around 5,000 stranded migrant workers gathered in front of the office of Saudi Arabian Airlines at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka in Karwan Bazar area demanding the air tickets.
