Police arrest two over threatening to kill PM

Online desk: Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two people in connection with threatening to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in an email from Saudi Arabia.
The arrestees are Deen Islam and Kabir Hossain.
Additional Commissioner of Police and CTTC Unit Chief Md Asaduzzaman revealed the information at a press briefing at DMP media centre in the capital on Sunday.
He said an email was sent to DMP’s Media and Public Relations Centre at 4:59pm on April 17, 2023.
In the mail it was written, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be shot at 4 am on April 27. Bangladesh police do not have the power to prevent this attack”, the CTTC official said adding that, the same message was written in the body of the email as well.
Later, the matter was informed to Prime Minister’s office (PMO) in the capital and at that time, the security of the Prime Minister was increased during her foreign visits.
DMP media centre had informed the matter to CTTC. A team of the unit’s Cybercrimes Investigation Division, after technical analysis and investigation, had identified the email sender, Deen Islam, said CTTC Unit Chief.
A review of the IP activity of the sender of the threat message revealed his location in Saudi Arabia, he added.
On 20th April 2023, CTTC filed a case with the Ramna Model Police Station against the anonymous accomplices who threatened to kill the prime minister.
On the same date, the CTTC took action through NCB-Interpol at Police Headquarters, and simultaneously using diplomatic channels to repatriate the accused and his accomplices from Saudi Arabia to Bangladesh.
He said after a long investigation by the Saudi authorities, the government of Saudi Arabia finally arrested Deen Islam, Kabir Hossain and sent them to Bangladesh on January 29.
They were arrested at the Hazrat Shahjalal Airport after reaching Bangladesh, he said adding that, Deen and Kabir are now in police custody.
He said the arrestees brought a mobile phone and opened an e-mail ID and through this they had threatened to kill Prime Minister Hasina and later inactivated the mail ID, Asaduzzaman said, adding that during the arrest, a mobile phone with the recovery mobile number of the email address that was used to send the threat email was seized from Deen Islam.
Asaduzzaman told the media that Kabir Hossain is a president of one the faction of Juba Dal in Saudi Arabia and Deen Islam is a leader of the organisation. To create an anarchy in the country, they had threatened PM.
He said police are continuing their investigations to find out whether anyone else is involved in the incident.
He also said that Deen Islam and Kabir had been staying in Saudi Arabia for 10 years and running their business.
