Sports desk: India have been fined 80 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in their one-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Mirpur on Sunday, the International Cricket Council said.
Match referee Ranjan Madugalle the imposed the fine after India were ruled to be four overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration, the ICC said in a statement.
In accordance with rules, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
‘India captain Rohit Sharma pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing,’ said the ICC.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz hit an unbeaten 38 as Bangladesh edged out India in the thrilling contest at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Chasing 187 for victory, the hosts fell to 136-9 before Mehidy and Mustafizur Rahman put together a 51 run partnership — Bangladesh’s best ever for the final wicket — to achieve their target with 24 balls to spare in Dhaka.
Bangladesh now lead the three-match series 1-0 with the second match on Wednesday at the same venue.
