Accused in journalist murder case killed in Cumilla gunfight

Bangladesh desk: A murder case accused was killed in a gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion in Golabari area of Burichang upazila in Cumilla on early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Raju, son of Sadek Mia of village Bishnupur. Police said that he was involved in drugs peddling and smuggling and he was the prime accused in the murder case of journalist Mohiuddin Sarkar Naeem.
Journalist Mohiuddin Sarkar Naeem, 28, was shot to death by unidentified killers at the Indian border of Burichang upazila on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
On Thursday, the victim’s mother Nazima Akhter filed a case against six people, including Raju, with the Burichang police station.
Major Mohammad Sakib Hossain, commander of RAB-11, said that acting on a tip-off the elite force conducted a drive in Golabari area to arrest Naeem’s killers.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, miscreants opened fire at them and they had to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight.
Raju received bullet injuries during the gunfight, the RAB officer said adding that he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
A pistol and ammunitions were recovered from the spot and a RAB member was injured in the incident.
The body was kept at Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
