Bangladesh now faces serious political crisis: Dr Kamal

Dr Kamal Hossain

Bangladesh desk: Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain has called upon the countrymen to be united to protect their rights to vote.

Speaking a seminar organised by Nagarik Samaj at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday, Dr Kamal alleged that Awami League government has seized people’s voting right. He observed that Bangladesh is now facing serious political crisis.

He alleged that the people had lost their democratic rights ensured by the constitution of 1972.

He said people would have to ensure their rights to vote.

He said that if people failed to be active to protect their rights to vote, the vested quarter that wanted to deprive people of their right to vote would become successful.

Speaking at the seminar, politicians, academics and civil society leaders alleged that the Awami League government had introduced autocratic rule in the country.

Former carekater government adviser Dr Akbar Ali Khan said that the ongoing political crisis would not come to an end unless a free and fair general election could not be held.

Nagarik Samaj placed a four-point demand at the seminar.

The demands include holding a free and fair national election for restoration of democratic rule, introduction of a neutral caretaker government for conducting the national elections, controlling the price hike of essential commodities and improving the education system of the country.

Dhaka University teacher Professor Asif Nazrul, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association chief executive Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Gono Forum executive president Makabbir Khan MP also spoke.
