DMP chief Shafiqul Islam retires on Oct 30

Bangladesh desk: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Mohd. Shafiqul Islam is going to retirement on October 30.

Decision has been taken to send him on retirement as per the government service rules as his age will be 59 years on October 29 next.

As a result, he remains as the DMP chief for just 7 days. Previously, there were rumors of extension of his service, but now he is going to retire from service.

At the order of the President, the Department of Public Security under the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular about the retirement of Mohd. Shafiqul Islam.

The order, signed by Dhananjay Kumar Das, Deputy Secretary to Department of Public Security under the Home Ministry, said that Shafiqul Islam was given retirement on October 29 at the age of 59 under the Public Service Act 2018.

Sources at the Home Ministry said it would be known about the next commissioner of the DMP within one or two days.

It is learnt that Additional IGP of Police Headquarters SM Ruhul Amin, Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) of the headquarters M Khurshid Hossain, Additional IGP Khandaker Golam Faruque and Additional IGP and chief of Special Branch Monirul Islam are on the list to be made new DMP Commissioner.

Shafiqul Islam took over as DMP commissioner on September 6, 2019. He is an 8th batch officer of BCS. He joined the Bangladesh Police on December 20, 1989 as an ASP.

Shafiqul Islam hails from reputed Muslim family at village Alamdanga in Chuadanga district. He got BSc (Hons) degree from the Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1986.

During his long career, he served as police supe in Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Sunamganj and Cumilla districts. In addition, he served as Chittagong Metropolitan Police commissioner, Chittagong’s DIG Range and the Dhaka Range’s DIG.

After receiving promotion to Additional IGP, he held the position of head of the counter-terrorism unit, head of the HRM department at the Police Headquarters.
