Fresh case filed against husband Babul over Mitu murder

Bangladesh desk: A fresh case was filed on Wednesday over the murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016 accusing the victim’s husband former police officer Babul Akter and seven others.
The victim’s father Mosharaf Hossain, a former police inspector, filed the case at about 1:30pm with Panchlaish police station in Chattogram, said Abul Kashem Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of the police station.
After filing the case, Mosharaf told reporters that Mitu was murdered over an extra-marital affair of Babul.
The other accused in the case are Kamrul Islam Sikdar alias Musa, 40, Ehteshamul Hoque alias Haniful Hoque alias Bhola, 41, Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, 27, Md Anwar Hossain, 28, Md Khairul Islam alias Kalu, 28, Md Saidul Islam Sikder alias Saku, 45, and Shahjahan Mia, 28.
Earlier, the Police Bureau of Investigation submitted final report in the case, filed by Mitu’s husband Babul Akter, over the murder in 2016.
Former police superintendent Babul, who is now in PBI custody, was shown arrested in the case, said PBI officials.
Earlier at a press briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday, PBI deputy inspector general Banaj Kumar Majumder said that Babul was in their custody as they had primarily found his involvement in the murder.
Mitu was stabbed and shot to death on June 5, 2016 when she was walking her son to his school bus stop at the Port City’s GEC Intersection.
After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men with Panchlaish police station.
After the murder, investigators arrested five persons, Motaleb Mia Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Md Shahjahan and Saidul Sikder Shakur— Musa’s elder brother.
Motaleb and Anwar have made statements before a court, implicating seven persons, including Musa, who, according to the two, directly took part in the killing.
The PBI chief said that Musa was involved in the murder and PBI in its investigation has confirmed Musa was Babul’s source.
